Los Angeles inhabitant Louis Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal) makes due by searching and trivial burglary. He falters into another profession as a cameraman and - outfitted with a camcorder and police scanner - starts nighttime invasions over the city looking for stunning and terrible violations. When he grabs the attention of a shopworn news executive (Rene Russo) who respects the opportunity to raise her station's appraisals, Louis goes to progressively more prominent lengths to get the "cash shot."
